Highland 10391 Kar Pak Rainproof Soft-Sided Car Top Carrier Review
Before I bought this I saw reviews about water getting into the bag during travel. I bought it anyway. The first time we used it was traveling in a heavy winter storm. The bag was only about half full so it collapsed a lot because of the wind. I knew this would happen and I’m ok with that. The cool thing about this bag is that even with all the accumulation of slush and snow in the sunken parts, no water got through to our stuff. I was impressed. It has a very sturdy zipper and it’s easy to grab when you’re wearing gloves.
We are a family of 7 & were planning a vacation from southern Illinois to Florida for our 5 small children to see the ocean for the first time. We researched many cartop carriers and after reading all the reviews chose the Highland Kar Pak. I paid the extra shipping fee to have it delivered in time before we left. It arrived and my better half was thrilled with what it turned out to be. Easy loading, still room to spare, tied down nicely, the complete package was impressive to him. He had intended on tying it down with rope for extra assurance. We decided it was safe without it & we shouldn’t have to and set out on our 16 hour drive. Around 9 o’clock at night, 5 hours in, and somewhere in TN we were startled by loud knocking on the window. After pulling over on the side of the busy interstate we discovered that the front right strap had snapped away from the bag itself. Luckily we had some small bungee cords on our cooler in the van. We secured it till we were satisfied & drove on. All was well until the following day when we were 2 exits away from our destination & heard a similar disturbing noise. We pulled off once again and the same thing had happened with the strap on the other side. We didn’t have many choices then so we drove slowly to the next town & purchased ratchet straps for $40 so we would be able to secure the bag on the trip home. We were so very much pleased with this purchase in every way and then so very disappointed when both front straps broke away from the bag. I would buy it again in a heartbeat. And I would also definitely take extra precautions when securing it to the vehicle.
I bought this item in 2008 and have used that bag for 2 long trips without any problems or noticeable wear. I bought a second bag (same item) this summer and used it, along with the older bag, for a 2 week trip to Yellowstone and back. Both bags were used identically — on top of the vehicle when traveling and on the ground while staying at campgrounds. The newest bag has a different feel to it and does not have the rougher look to the outside surface. The new bag immediately had problems with one of the permanently attached straps — started pulling loose at the base where it’s sealed to the bag surface. The newer bag also has 3 or 4 obvious “wear” points (holes that don’t go completely through) on the outer surface where you can now see the underlying webbing. Even though the older bag made the same trip this year, plus made a similar 2 week trip last summer, it still looks like new with no obvious wear points. I can only conclude that the manufacturer reduced the quality of the bag since last year and then increased the price by about $6! So, be prepared for problems if you purchase the latest version of this bag.
We needed a car top carrier for a drive from Arizona to Utah. After much research, we decided to give the Kar Pak a try. It worked wonderfully! We fit two suitcases, a shuffle bag, and some random stuff in garbage bags on top of our minivan. During the drive, we weathered snow, sun, and rain. We were on the road for a total of 13 hours. By the time we reached our destination, everything inside the Kar Pak was dry and perfect. The Kar Pak itself was easily washed off, folded up in it’s box, and put into storage. This is a great option for someone who doesn’t want to spend a lot of money on a car top carrier. It’s easy to install, doesn’t budge (we checked the straps several times during the trip, they never loosened or anything), and it keeps everything inside dry if it rains or snows.
